Featuring Artist Conversations, Drop-In Art-Making, Tours, and Half-Price Tickets
On Saturday, June 21, 2025 from 10 am to 5 pm the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) welcomes audiences for a day exploring intersections between art and community. Inspired by principles of inclusion and collaboration, admission all day is half-price.
Discussion on Octavia Butler: 11 am to 12 pm
In the intimate setting of the museum ‘s Library and Research Center, artist Alison Saar discusses the visionary example and ongoing relevance of author Octavia Butler. The casual, drop in conversation invites visitors to see Saar’s recent interpretation of Butler’s ground-breaking novel Kindred (1979) up close. Join us to consider the role of artists and authors to provide social critique and led by example to create community. More about Saar’s collaboration with Arion Press to be featured at a formal artist talk, Artist in Conversation: Alison Saar, on Sunday, June 22.

Drop-In Art-Making: 10 am to 4 pm
Join NMWA educators in the museum’s studio from 10 am to 4 pm for free, self-directed art-making activities inspired by Alison Saar’s printmaking practice and other artworks on view. Visitors of all ages are invited to participate. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Tour: Celebrating Pride:12 to 1 pm
Explore the creative contributions of LGBTQIA+ artists in NMWA’s collection. From realistically rendered paintings to abstract sculpture, artworks have a story to tell. On this engaging, interactive tour, you will look closely at several works that span time and space and consider themes of identity and community. Free with admission but advanced registration required.

Collection Highlights Tour: 2 to 3 pm
Explore the museum’s collection during an engaging 45-minute drop-in tour. This guided experience features six to eight works on view, highlighting the creative contributions of artists from the 16th century to today. Artist Alison Saar will join museum educators as a special guest in the galleries to speak directly to some of her works on view.
