Black Broadway in Washington D.C.

Explore the musical and cultural heritage of Washington's Black Broadway with local author and historian Briana Thomas. This two hour guided walking tour is a great activity for groups

Journey through one of Washington, D.C.'s most historical and unique neighborhoods on a guided walking tour led by local journalist and author of Black Broadway in Washington, D.C., Briana Thomas. With the use of community storytelling and engaging visuals, we will stroll through the Greater U Street area once known as Black Broadway. During this experience you will visit the area's oldest landmarks, view one of a kind murals, meet notable history makers, sightsee 100-year old theaters, and learn about the Jazz and Cultural Renaissance that paved the way for today's most famous African American successes, educators, musicians, talents, and heroes. Keep an eye out for some hidden gems along the way! After the tour, immerse yourself in the Black Broadway culture and have a delicious private group lunch with Briana at one of D.C.’s most popular historic Black-owned restaurants, Ben’s Chili Bowl.

About Briana:
After five years of researching the history of Washington, D.C. as a local journalist, I wrote and published my debut best-selling book, Black Broadway in Washington, D.C. I’m passionate about the heritage and legacy of U Street and love to share the rich and inspiring story with others. My research has been featured on television news programs such as ABC, NBC and CBS, and published in Washingtonian Magazine. I've also presented the history of U Street to various companies, book clubs, non-profits, youth groups and schools.
